New “fillers” have been introduced to help improve wrinkles, enhance lips and restore youthful facial contours in the lower and upper face. Kathleen M. Welsh, MD, one of the most experienced dermatologists in San Francisco, is using these wrinkle fillers to help keep her patients looking their best.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several new fillers for wrinkles and contour improvements. They include: the collagen family , , and . Another option is Radiesse®. Radiesse® is an injectable gel with over 25 years of safety data behind it for other uses. It has an off-label use for facial rejuvenation. Given so many choices, Dr. Welsh can help you pick which product is best for you. Your choice may depend on prior treatments, whether your lines are deep or etched, or on upcoming social engagements. Wrinkle fillers can be done on the same day as your consultation and can give long-lasting, natural- looking results.
Worry lines that occur on the upper face from frowning, squinting can be improved with injections of BOTOX®. BOTOX® can also be used to diminish crow's feet and forehead lines. This procedure can be done in an office visit, with normal activity resumed afterwards.
Collagen is a natural protein that can be injected into wrinkles and scars. While BOTOX® works well for the upper face, collagen treatments are superior for the lower face. Collagen can be used to enhance thin lips, smile lines, and the corners of the mouth. Collagen may also be used with or without BOTOX® on the upper face.
Radiance is an injectable implant material that can fill the lines around the face and augment the lips. Unlike Collagen no allergy testing is required. The material can be placed without any skin testing. Best of all Radiance lasts years as opposed to months like Collagen. Although more costly than Collagen, in the long term less money is actually spent.
Other applications for Radiance include filling out depressions and scars on the face. The correction achieved is both predictable and long lasting.
The Thermage procedure is an advanced way of tightening skin that uses a unique form of radiofrequency energy to allow the Physician to tighten loose or sagging skin, producing a kind of "lift" without an incision or recovery time. It is the only non-invasive method to tighten loose skin.
With the gentle touch of the device tip, the surface of the skin is cooled, while the deeper tissue, is altered by radiofrequency heating. This not only tightens deeper skin tissue, but jumpstart's new collagen production, which occurs over a period of time.
While not a substitute for a surgical facelift, the Thermage procedure can be used on patients with a moderate amount of sagging skin and wrinkles. The Thermage procedure is sometimes referred to as a mini-face lift, ThermaLift or DermalLift by physicians who have observed that this non-surgical procedure lifts and tightens tissue, similar to a facelift without the surgery.
The Titan ™ is a safe, non-surgical procedure that uses an infrared light source to tighten skin and reverse the signs of aging. The Titan ™ device uniformly distributes heat below the skin, causing collagen contraction, while preserving the outer layer of skin through continuous cooling. This process stimulates long-term collagen rebuilding, leaving patients with younger-looking skin. The procedure tones, lifts and tightens skin on the face and neck and can be used to treat lax, loose or wrinkled skin throughout the body—including the abdomen, thighs and arms. The result is a more youthful, fresh complexion and long-lasting, tighter skin without injections, surgery or recovery time.
The Titan™ is cleared for treatment of wrinkles in Europe and for general dermatologic use in Canada. In the US, it is cleared for topical heating to increase local tissue temperature and circulation. An additional 510(k) clearance is pending in the US for the treatment of wrinkles.
